OpenBuildings Designer IFC Export #1: Administration

by | Apr 15, 2024 | BIM

OpenBuildings Designer includes complete integration with IFC 2×3 and IFC4*, including DataGroups for all supported IfcEntities, IfcTypes and necessary property definitions to support the required PSets (Property Sets). This is included in the standard dataset deliveries in the C:\ProgramData\Bentley\OpenBuildings CONNECT Edition\Configuration\Datasets\DatasetExtensions\ folder.

To make sure the extension is loaded and available within a session of OpenBuildings Designer, the IFC_WORKSET configuration variable needs to be set. This can be included at Organization, Workspace or Workset level depending on your needs using the following options:

IFC_WORKSET = 0   IFC extensions are not loaded

IFC_WORKSET = 1      IFC extensions are loaded

IFC_WORKSET = 2     IFC extensions are loaded plus the FM Handover (COBie) MVD requirements

Additionally, the configuration to include the dataset.cfg for the extension is also needed:

%if $(IFC_WORKSET)==1 || $(IFC_WORKSET)==2

  %if exists ($(IFCDIR)Dataset.cfg)

    % include $(IFCDIR)Dataset.cfg

  %endif

%endif

The above configurations can be found in any of the out of the box Building_Examples worksets, although IFC_WORKSET is set to 0 by default.

* IFC4.3 is the latest official version of IFC. The Bentley dataset does not include the full list of IFC4.3 entities. Care will need to be taken if using this version to ensure that it is suitable for use, especially for infrastructure projects.
